The High Commission of Sri Lanka in Maldives organized a beach clean-up initiative in collaboration with the Maldives Ocean Plastic Alliance (MOPA) and Housing Development Corporation (HDC) on 25 August 2026 in Hulhumalé. The event was organized as part of a shared commitment to environmental protection, community engagement and strengthening cooperation between Sri Lanka and the Maldives. The event was graced by the presence of Member of Parliament and Chairman of the Maldives–Sri Lanka Parliamentary Friendship Group, Ahmed Xamyr.
The clean-up brought together staff members of the High Commission, representatives of MOPA and HDC, staff members of sponsors and supporters from TTS Maldives, ADK Enterprises, BBM, VB Brothers, WAMCO, Universal Foundation, Male Aerated Water Company, as well as members of the Sri Lankan and Maldivian communities, including children.
The participants worked collectively to remove plastic waste, discarded materials and other debris from the designated beach area. A total of 585 kg of plastic and general waste was collected within one hour. The initiative highlighted the importance of maintaining clean and healthy coastal environments, particularly in island nations where marine ecosystems are vital to communities and livelihoods.
Delivering the welcome remarks, the High Commissioner stated that the event was organized to demonstrate solidarity and friendship towards the Maldives by joining its initiatives for cleaner beaches and healthier oceans. Addressing the gathering, President of MOPA, Ahmed Maumoon, explained the importance of responsible waste management, while President of Universal Foundation, Iyaz Waheed, highlighted the importance of protecting the Maldives’ pristine marine and coastal environment and the shared responsibility requiring continued cooperation and active participation from all sectors of society.
