The Sri Lanka Embassy in Doha successfully recovered a total of SLR 80,886,895.32 from January to July 2026 as death compensation on behalf of the Next of Kin (NoK) of Sri Lankan nationals who had passed away in Qatar, despite the challenges arising from the tense situation in the region. The recovered funds were remitted to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism in Colombo and to the respective deceased persons’ NoKs. The amount also included cases pending since 2023.
Out of the total SLR 80,886,895.32, SLR 13,229,128.00 was directly paid to the NoKs through the efforts of the Embassy, while SLR 67,657,767.32 was recovered by the Embassy and transferred to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism for disbursement to the respective NoKs.
Sri Lanka’s Ambassador in Doha, Sithara Khan and Minister Dharmasiri Wijewardane closely coordinated with the respective companies, the Consular Affairs Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, the Government of Qatar, and the legal firm working with the Embassy to recover the compensation payments.
It may be noted that in 2025, the Embassy successfully recovered a total of SLR 197,719,710.36 in compensation and disbursed the funds to the NoKs in Sri Lanka.
