Marking Swedish Cinnamon Bun Day (Kanelbullens dag), the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Stockholm hosted “From Ceylon to Kanelbulle”, an afternoon event celebrating Ceylon Cinnamon and its connection with Sweden’s beloved cinnamon bun, or kanelbulle. The event was co-organised with Arom & Kryddföreningen, the Swedish Spice and Flavour Association.
The event brought together industry representatives, culinary professionals, Swedish Foreign Ministry officials and friends of Sri Lanka to explore the journey of Ceylon Cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) from Sri Lankan plantations to Swedish kitchens, highlighting the connection between Swedish culinary traditions and Sri Lankan heritage.
Guests were welcomed with Ceylon Tea infused with Ceylon Cinnamon. The programme featured presentations, video screenings and live demonstrations tracing the journey of cinnamon from the peeling of the bark to its use in Swedish kitchens.
Secretary-General of Arom & Kryddföreningen, Rasmus Bäckström, highlighted the significance of the event for Sweden’s spice and culinary industry. Food Scientist Dr. Samanthi Madawala delivered a presentation titled “Chemistry of Cinnamon”, explaining the distinctive qualities, flavour and versatility of Ceylon Cinnamon.
The short film Meet the Producers showcased leading Sri Lankan cinnamon producers and the farmers and artisans behind the spice. Another film, Ceylon Cinnamon Inspiration, featured renowned Swedish chef Per Morberg sourcing cinnamon and other spices from Sri Lanka. This was followed by “The Chef’s Perspective: Cooking with Ceylon Cinnamon”, which presented ideas for using the spice in traditional and contemporary cuisine by Sri Lankan chefs in Sweden.
During the networking session, guests enjoyed traditional Swedish cinnamon buns alongside authentic Sri Lankan cuisine prepared with Ceylon Cinnamon and Ceylon Tea.
From Ceylon to Kanelbulle formed part of the Embassy’s ongoing efforts to promote Sri Lankan products, strengthen economic and cultural ties with Sweden, and raise awareness of Ceylon Cinnamon as a premium Sri Lankan spice with a distinct geographical identity.
